Tap Stand Shinjuku: Beer bar

Creative pizzas and a good selection of US craft beers are the major draws at this very busy beer bar, along with a convenient location just a few minutes from Shinjuku station. The bar has twenty taps in all, with half devoted to well-chosen Japanese beers and half to mostly US West Coast imports. Beers come in three sizes, with medium-size glasses (330ml) priced at Y850 for domestic beers and Y970 for imports - slightly higher than average, but understandable given the location.

The dozen or so pizzas feature your choice of crispy or "bread-style" crust, and the crispy is recommended. We enjoyed an interesting Mediterranean-inspired ground-lamb pizza with cottage cheese and cilantro that looked almost like a pizza salad. The Pulled Pork Jalapeno Pizza is another popular choice, while the non-pizza side of the menu offers simple bar snacks like chicken wings.

Seating can be tight at peak times, so it's worth calling to reserve a table if you're planning to eat as well as drink here. There's a two-hour time limit, and a Y300 table charge whether or not you reserve.
