Schmatz: Akasaka
Schmatz Akasaka: German

This casual German beer bar started life as a food truck at the Aoyama Farmers Market, and the kitchen offers a small but well-executed menu of schnitzel, sausages and other meaty German fare to go with your beer. Eight taps dispense German and German-style beers like Hafenstoff porter, Edelweiss Pale Ale, Ayinger Dunkel and Sapporo-brand Edel Pils.

The sausages in particular are far better than your usual bar food, with tempting variations like herb bratwurst, cheese, porkchop apple, "spicy spicy" and wild boar, all served with excellent sauerkraut. Other dishes include grilled beer-marinated herbed chicken, mussels steamed in beer, and roast beef over rice.

A couple of the beer taps are devoted to seasonal specials, and all beers come in three sizes. Small glasses are priced Y450-520 and large ones Y790-900. A tasting flight of any three beers of your choosing, served in rather tiny glasses, will set you back Y1100.

The dining room is very casual, with most seating at high tables with stools, although there are a few proper dining tables in back. A mix of contemporary German pop music plays in the background. When the front door is open, the dining room can get smokier than you might expect for a non-smoking venue.

Budget around Y3500-4500 in the evening for food and drink, including table charge, or less if you just have a beer and a snack. Lunches run around Y1000.
