Schmatz: Kichijoji
Schmatz Kichijoji: German

This German bar-restaurant chain offers a variety of German and German-style beers at very reasonable prices, especially compared to other German restaurants in town. The eight beers on draft are mostly original beers from Schmatz, although they do have a few from German breweries like Bitburger and Erdinger, plus the very good Sapporo-brewed Edelpils. They're all distinctively flavored, and the three-part tasting flights are a good way to discover your favorites.

The extensive food menu offers pizzas, pastas and risotti, a tempting range of sausages (lamb, herb, currywurst), meat dishes (schnitzel, charcuterie platter), and even some German vegetable dishes. The Jumbo Sausage Ball Smothered with Melted Cheese is as compelling as it sounds, and the smoked-duck otoshi makes an appetizing starter.

The dining room is comfortable and quite lively during peak evening hours, and service is friendly and efficient. Budget around Y3000 for food and drink at dinnertime, or Y1000-1200 for lunch. Beers are all priced at Y650 and Y950 for small and large sizes, or Y1100 for a tasting flight.
