Conveniently located in the Shimo-Kitazawa station complex, this new venture from the popular German chain Schmatz is a combination bakery, restaurant and beer bar, and they even serve breakfast. You'll find a nice selection of rye and pumpernickel breads, Danish pastries with fruit fillings, large-size pretzels and chocolate-covered croissants. Savory pastries include Gorgonzola-Walnut Rye Roll, Pastrami and Pickle Rye Roll, Salmon-Caper Rye Roll and Spinach Strudel with Feta Cheese.
In the morning there's sit-down breakfast service from 8-11am, featuring light dishes like Croque-Madame and Avocado Toast. These are served with mini-cups of granola and yogurt and your choice of orange juice, vegetable juice, herb tea and various coffees to drink. Coffee and tea are also ready to take away if you just want to grab a drink and a pastry to go.
Lunch is served from 11am-3pm, with a choice of schnitzels, sausages, sandwiches (German meatball, BLT-Avocado), and soup and salad platters. Sandwiches come with fries, soup and a beverage and are priced from Y900, while a two-sausage platter with bread, soup and beverage is Y1300.
If you're mainly here for the beer you can select from seven beers on tap, including five or six of Schmatz's own German-style craft brews. Three-part tasting flights are priced at Y1100. The evening food menu covers the usual sausages, schnitzels and salads along with pizza-like flammkuchen and quick tapas-style dishes.
